Dolphins draft updates from Round 2-3: Miami lands guard Jonah Savaiinaea, sets board for Day 3 (2025)

Editor's note: The 2025 NFL draft is now on Day 3. Follow our live updates to track all the Miami Dolphins' picks.

The Miami Dolphins made one move on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL draft. General manager Chris Grier entered with two picks across the second and third rounds and left with one guard.

Grier made a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders to move up and select Arizona guard Jonah Savaiinaea with the No. 37 overall pick. That followed a first round in which he took Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant 13th overall. The moves addressed one major area of need on the offensive line after tackleTerron Armstead retiredand guardRobert Jones left.

But the move meant the Dolphins passed over a host of cornerback and safety options. They have to rebuild their secondary after safetyJevon Holland signed elsewhereand cornerbackJalen Ramseyis seeking a trade. Fortunately, Grier has seven picks to work with still on the draft's third and final day. (And yes, Shedeur Sanders is still shockingly available.)

The Palm Beach Post and USA TODAY Network is covering the festivities in Green Bay all weekend. Keep scrolling for highlights and analysis from the second day of the NFL draft.

Dolphins trade up to pick guard Jonah Savaiinaea

Miami made a five-pick trade with the Raiders to take a guard with the No. 37 overall pick. They chose Jonah Savaiinaea from Arizona. He was No. 40 on the big board of USA TODAY's Ayrton Ostly.

"His strong showing at the combine and arm length in a 6-foot-4, 324-pound frame lend credence that he could potentially line up at tackle in the NFL given his experience in college and heavy anchor," Ostly wrote. "His foot speed might hold him back, though, and make him a career guard. Still, his size and burst should be a major asset, especially in the run game."

Chris Grier talks draft trade, passing on cornerback

Dolphins GM Chris Grier said guard Jonah Savaiinaea had been a target for his versatility and athleticism. He said the trade to acquire him was not about passing over the cornerbacks available at that point in the draft. "The draft isn't over," he said. "There's time to address the position. A trade is possible."

What Jonah Savaiinaea said

Dolphins second-round pick Jonah Savaiinaea went to the same high school as Tua Tagovailoa. "I am excited to block for Tua in the future," the guard from Hawaii said after he was drafted. "I've only blocked for Polynesian quarterbacks in my career. God wants me to block for my people."

Jonah Savaiinaea grade, analysis

"Savaiinaea should have a great impact on Miami's run game, which struggled in 2024," Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post wrote in his scouting report. "Scouts say Saviinaea has great hands and can pick up blocks in the second level. This was an outstanding pick."

Hal Habib disagrees, giving the pick a C+: "Upgrading the Dolphins' interior offensive line was a priority this year -- but drafting him meant not picking a cornerback. With Kendall Fuller and Jalen Ramsey gone or nearly gone, was cornerback not a greater need?"

Dolphins-Raiders trade details

Miami gave up the rest of their picks on Day 2 to move up and take guard Jonah Savaiinaea. Here are the details:

  • Dolphins get: No. 37 pick (second round, Jonah Savaiinaea); No. 143 pick (fifth round)
  • Raiders get: No. 48 pick (second round); No. 98 pick (third round); No. 135 pick (fourth round)

Kenneth Grant introduction

Dolphins first-round pick Kenneth Grant spoke for the first time in Miami Gardens. Here's what he said.

Jonah Savaiinaea highlights

When do the Dolphins pick next?

Wisconsin native Beau Allen announced Texas safety Andrew Mukuba as the 64th pick of the draft, ushering in Round 3. With the trade that landed them Jonah Savaiinaea, the Dolphins no longer have a third-round pick. Their next pick is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, when they have the 116th pick.

  • Round 1 (13 overall) -Kenneth Grant, DT, Michigan
  • Round 2 (37) - Jonah Savaiinaea, G, Arizona
  • Round 4 (116)
  • Round 5 (143)
  • Round 5 (150)
  • Round 5 (155)
  • Round 7 (224)
  • Round 7 (231)

Dillon Gabriel goes to Browns

Former Oregon, Oklahoma and UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel went with the 94th overall pick to Cleveland, taking one more team seemingly out of the running for Colorado's Shedeur Sanders. There have now been five QBs taken in the draft, and Sanders, who was mocked as high as a top-10 pick, will likely be waiting until Day 3 to find a team.

Jalen Milroe picked by Seahawks

The fourth quarterback is off the board, and again it's not Shedeur Sanders. Alabama's Jalen Milroe was taken with the No. 92 pick to compete for the starting job after they traded away Geno Smith.

Where is Shedeur Sanders going in NFL draft?

One of the big surprises of the first round was Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders going untaken. With Heisman winner and No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter as his main target, Sanders led the nation by completing 74% of his passes, ranked fourth with 4,134 passing yards and was second only to No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward with 37 touchdowns.

He kept falling as the Saints took Louisville's Tyler Shough in the second round, then as the Browns, Raiders and Steelers continued to pass on him in the third round. If he continues to fall all the way to Day 3, could the Dolphins make him Tua Tagovailoa's backup?

Cornerback Will Johnson picked by Cardinals

The last of the Dolphins' major draft needs is cornerback, and one of the best in the draft fell all the way to No. 47. Michigan's Will Johnson is headed to Arizona, and he went the pick before Miami's original's second-round spot before they traded up to select Arizona guard Jonah Savaiinaea. Another cornerback went 53rd to the Buccaneers: Benjamin Morrison of Notre Dame.

Here are the other recent picks:

  • No. 44: Donovan Ezeiruaku, Boston College edge, Cowboys

Tyler Shough goes to Saints as Shedeur Sanders continues to fall

New Orleans was one of the teams in need of a quarterback, and they got theirs with the 40th overall pick: Louisville's Tyler Shough. He had been rising up draft boards after the NFL combine, but his rise means there have now been three QBs taken and none of them Colorado's Shedeur Sanders. The Steelers and Browns are the other teams in most need of a quarterback: Neither are on the clock again until the third round.

The other recent picks:

  • No. 36: Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins to the Browns
  • No. 38: Ohio State running back Treyveyon Henderson to the Patriots
  • No. 39: Missouri receiver Luther Burden to the Bears
  • No. 41: South Carolina defensive tackle T.J. Sanders to the Bills
  • No. 42: LSU tight end Mason Taylor to the Jets

When do the Dolphins pick today?

The Miami Dolphins had two picks scheduled for today at the NFL draft. They had one pick in the second round (48th overall) and one compensatory pick in the third round (98th overall). USA TODAY estimates the Dolphins will make the No. 48 pick between 9:07 and 9:14 p.m., while the No. 98 pick will come between 2:05 and 2:10 a.m. (don't worry, the draft shouldn't take that long).

Who is Dolphins guest announcer at NFL draft?

Day 2 at the NFL draft means Commissioner Roger Goodell no longer will announce the picks in Green Bay. The Dolphins' guest announcer tonight is fullback Alec Ingold, a Wisconsin native who played in college for the Badgers.

The first three picks of the night were UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger to the Browns, Iowa State wide receiver Jayden Higgins to the Texans, and South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori to the Seahawks, who landed the pick in a trade with the Titans.

Terron Armstead approves of Kenneth Grant pick

He might be retired from playing football, but former Dolphins Pro Bowl tackle Terron Armstead is definitely keeping tabs on his old team. "I'm a big fan of the Grant pick!!" Armstead posted to social media shortly before the former Michigan defensive tackle was scheduled to appear before reporters at the Dolphins training facility. "He has an unteachable motor! Paired with Zach (Sieler) who's a master at creating rush lanes for others!"

Dolphins mock draft

The Dolphins' needs for Day 2 are cornerback, safety and guard, according to the Palm Beach Post's Hal Habib. In Joe Schad's latest four-round mock draft, he had Miami taking Kenneth Grant with their second-round pick, but they already took him at No. 13 overall.

Round 3: Joshua Farmer. This is not a terrible outcome. The possibility of Miami going with a front seven of Zach Sieler-Kenneth Grant-Joshua Farmer and two of Jaelan Phillips/Bradley Chubb/Chop Robinson is really darn intriguing. Double-dipping at defensive tackle makes sense for us here. - Joe Schad, Palm Beach Post

Who did the Dolphins draft?

With the No. 13 pick in the first round, the Dolphins took Kenneth Grant, a defensive tackle from Michigan. Grant played in 41 games (17 starts) over three seasons for the Wolverines. He recorded 69 tackles (including 11.5 for loss), 6.5 sacks, an interception, 12 passes defended and three fumble recoveries.

"The Dolphins have been perceived as too soft, with an emphasis on speed and creativity over sheer force and will and power," wrote Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. "The hope forgeneral manager Chris Grieris Grant delivers on all that promise of power."

Where is NFL draft 2025?

This year's host for the NFL draft is Green Bay, Wisconsin. The draft is taking place in the Titletown area around Lambeau Field, home stadium of the Green Bay Packers.

What time does the NFL draft start tonight?

The second round of the 2025 NFL draft is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
